Theory Behind Stress

Signs of Stress

When you get stressed, certain things happen.


As pressure builds up, like the air-pressure in a rubber tyre:

   - you feel tightness as in a tight chest, or

  -  you need to take a deep breath or sigh or

   - you feel something pushing your Adam’s apple upwards, closing your throat

   - you want to loosen clothes because your abdomen feels full or

   - you find you cannot move so comfortably or smoothly or

   - you get tension in your shoulders or jaw, or your heart beats faster or you sweat or ...


What Happens as Stagnant Qi moves on to the Next Stage?

If the cause of your stress doesn’t go away, the pressure turns into what the Chinese call Wind, and/or Heat.


Wind is easy to understand - it’s movement of various kinds: always busy, restless movements, chewing your fingernails, scratching your chin, talking lots – hot air!


Heat describes what happens if stress makes you hot. You might just feel hot and thirsty, but it could appear as irritability, eczema, offensive diarrhea, or inflammation.


Various emotions emerge, being your way of dealing with the strain. All have either Wind or Heat symptoms.


What About Those Feelings?

Some people get angry as their Qi stagnates and they show signs of stress. Other people cry. Some people clam up and go all tight-lipped. Other people are fearful; some get hysterical.


Of course, for some people, the emotion may have produced the stress in the first place.


It works both ways.


What to do: and what happens next if you don’t

The book explains what you can do to help yourself and, depending on the emotions underlying the stress, what will probably happen next if you can't or don't do anything about it.


In other words, it shows you how different kinds of stress produce different kinds of disease if the stress can’t be resolved.


Many kinds of anxiety, depression, hypertension, headaches, insomnia, cramps and spasms have their roots in stress.


There's a good side to stress too. The book shows you how to harness this energy for health.

Who Wrote the Book?

Jonathan Clogstoun-Willmott has been using Chinese medicine for 38 years, during which he has seen tens of thousands of interesting, wonderful patients.


He has lectured and taught Chinese medicine to students from many backgrounds including medical students.


He has used many different therapies including acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese herbs, Bowen technique, nutrition, Shiatsu and homoeopathy.  He is the author of www.acupuncture-points.org, a site on Chinese medicine in English visited daily by hundreds of people from round the world.


He has treated stressed people and explained how Qi stagnation works ever since he began.


For six years, he was, and is now again, British Acupuncture Council Regional Coordinator for South East Scotland and he is currently Chair of the Scottish Association of Professional Homoeopaths. He works in Edinburgh, Scotland.
